Jan Baetens and Éric Trudel, “The return of the text: avatars of the literary remake. Introduction”
One often hears claims that if literature has any future it will be off the page; and yet books are far from having disappeared. Not only are new forms of books constantly being invented, but existing texts are also repeated, reworked, reappropriated or republished – a reality central to literary history, but generally neglected by scholarship. The goal of this issue is to study such remakes in order to shed light on the posterity of a given text, and to underline the role it plays in the creation of new literary works, beyond the better known practices of intertextuality and hypertextuality.
Keywords: remake, recontextualization, republishing, rewriting, intramediality.
Gilles Philippe, « Retake/remake.
Gilles Philippe, “Retake/remake. On Marguerite Duras’s Œuvres complètes”
What changes in our perception of Duras ’ books whether we read them in one or another of the forms in which they are available: in separate works for the most part; collected, for some, in a Quarto volume; all assembled in the Complete Works of the Pléiade? We will see that certain editorial options dramatize the chronology of the publication of the texts; we will then focus on a particular case, that of the volume Théâtre III of 1984.
Keywords: Marguerite Duras, Quarto collection, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade collection, The Lover, 20th Century Theater.
Christelle Reggiani, “The heritage series as editorial remake. Perec enters the Pléiade”
What is to be gained, from an interpretative standpoint, by reconsidering literary reissues as cinematographic remakes? Based on the edition of Perec ’ s Works in the “Bibliothèque de la Pléiade” (2017), this article examines how the “remake” metaphor – given that every editorial recomposition delivers a rereading – makes visible a double “strange loop” (D. Hofstadter) that constitutes at once an optical and critical device.
Keywords: Georges Perec, book history, republishing, anthology, hermeneutics.
Joao Da Rocha, “With or without retouch? Literary ‘portrait-souvenirs’ in the 20th century: the singular case of traveling texts”
The genre of the “portrait-souvenir” (Cocteau) seems to be the very example of a text that “returns”. One need only consider the many portraits that Cocteau, Colette, Fargue, or Soupault devote to their peers; all of them reappear after various textual manipulations that have yet to be examined carefully. This article shows how such texts are constantly reworked over the course of several publications, and underlines their surprising plasticity.
Keywords: portrait, rewriting, literary life, literary history, autobiography.
Christophe Meurée, “How to reframe. Jean-Philippe Toussaint’s poetics of recycling”
For the past twenty years, Jean-Philippe Toussaint has been reusing previously published material to reinvest it in his subsequent works. Specifically, it is within works of an essayistic nature that excerpts from previous publications are disseminated. 194 Analyzing the nature and use of these reuses allows us to unveil a poetics of recycling, which recovers an ancient gesture widely influenced by a displacement of the imaginary of the text, within what Eduardo Navas has called “remix culture”.
Keywords: Jean-Philippe Toussaint, remix, poetics, recycling, literary interview, intertextuality.
Maud Lecacheur, “The true tales of François Beaune, or the art of serial remake”
From La Lune dans le puits (2013) to Dans ma zup (2019), François Beaune’s works enact the logic of the remake. This article examines the gathering of “true stories” that make up the writer’s raw material, and underlines the stakes of the remake in his works, as he takes up Paul Auster’s True Tales of American Life, and offers, on and off the page, restitutions of collected stories. Between recollection and repetition, the remake reflects key changes underway in contemporary literary writing.
Keywords: François Beaune, non fiction, contemporary writing outside the book, fieldwork literature, testimony, life narrative, authorship.
195Gerald Prince, “The Meursault Investigation, and narrative”
The Meursault Investigation is a reworking and rereading of L’Étranger. If, on the one hand, it is an admiring assessment of Camus’s novel, on the other hand, it is a condemnation of the French writer and his colonizing compatriots. Moreover, it is a meditation on narrative – narrated, nonnarrated, undernarrated, overnarrated – and its possibilities which helps to situate Kamel Daoud’s novel and which sheds light on the functioning of the narrative form itself.
Keywords: Albert Camus, Kamel Daoud, narrative, undernarrated, overnarrated.
René Audet, “Literal revisiting of literary works. Mobilization, manipulation and textual appropriation in blackout poetry and AI text generation”
The identity of a literary text resides notably in the letter of the works, attesting to the work of writing and composition. This dimension remains little considered in a specific way – a dimension that practices of rewriting and appropriation bring to light. Blackout poetry, illustrated here by the example of Aria de laine by the Quebec poet Meb, and texts generated by artificial intelligence, call into question the notions of authorship and originality in literary practice.
Keywords: rewriting, blackout poetry, artificial intelligence generated texts, authorship, originality, transtextuality, appropriation.
Maxime Decout, “Critical remakes as criticism in action”
Meta-hypertextuality can be defined as the combination of metatextuality and hypertextuality. The focus may be more on the rewriting and literarity of the text, or on the commentary and essay. These critical remakes trouble the boundary between literature and its commentaries.
Keywords: metatextuality, pastiche, Genette, Proust, Nabokov, Perec, Valincour, Oulipo, Bayard, Escola.
It is not uncommon for fairytales to be rewritten, either as parody or as reappropriation. The collection “Dans le ventre de la baleine” adopts neither of these options; instead, what is foregrounded in these books is formal experimentation and a desire to trouble the connection between text and image. Reading these remakes offers us a new experience: fragments of the originals, stored in our memory, are retrieved and see their tragic substratum unexpectedly brought to light.
Keywords: fairytale, picture book, rewriting, iconotext, reading, game.
Jan Baetens and Éric Trudel, “An interview with David Desrimais, co-founder and director of JBE Books”
Co-founder and director of JBE Books (formerly known as Jean Boîte éditions), David Desrimais addresses the ambition and challenge behind the launch of his publishing company: a desire to end the gap between the creativity of modern digital culture and the age-old but still promising medium of the book qua codex. The goal is not to shift from print to screen, but to invent in print form the equivalent of today ’ s and tomorrow ’ s technologically mediated culture.
Keywords: author, codex, screen, uncreative writing, publishing, logarithm, potentiality.
