This contribution proposes to study how, with Louis Lambert, Balzac describes all of the physical and intellectual modes of separation, all the way to the unsurpassable separation that is commonly called “madness,” to illustrate what is for him the fundamental idea of thought as choice and especially curse. The beneficiary, or rather the victim of this thought pays for the gift of discovering the unknown laws of the Mind with real suffering.
