Introduction »
Hadrien Clouet, Pauline Grimaud, Arnaud Mias, Jérôme Pélisse, “Unmissable employment time. Conflicts, compromises and transactions for salaried workers. Introduction”
Over the past twenty years, the temporalities of employment have been profoundly disrupted and become more diversified. This is largely as a result of the proliferation of laws in this area, which has led to renewed and increasingly polarized clashes between capital and labor. The introduction to this special report revisits how labor relations are (re)configured by struggles, transactions, or temporal adjustments in the workplace.
Keywords: employment time, capitalism, labor conflicts, transactions, collective bargaining, qualification, long time of work, time-related boundary.
Paul Bouffartigue, Jacques Bouteiller, “Postmen in the storm. When new working hours precipitate a job destabilization”
Introduction of a noon break, a working day finishing later, end of « fini-parti » practice: postmen working time is upheavaled, inducing a lot of localised social conflicts. This modification materializes and symbolizes a larger change of the work and of the professional group in a background of historical decline of mail volume. Working time raises major issues about the content, the control and the sense of work. Here, the occupational identity is questionned.
Keywords: working time, working hours, professional identity, mail, postmen.
Classification JEL : J22, J33, J52
Pauline Grimaud, “The local construction of different Sunday work’s rules in companies”
The current extension of Sunday work in France is performed by the multiplication of exemptions to Sunday rest. The significant increasing number of collective bargaining agreements on this subject between 2011 and 2016 indicates that Sunday work is more and more regulated at the firms ’ level. The expansion of Sunday work divides 253 concerned workers according the business sectors, the companies ’ rules and the workers ’ positions within firms.
Keywords: Sunday work, collective bargaining agreements, wage compensations, legal dispensation, employment status.
Classification JEL : J22 ; J52 ; L62
Juan Sebastian Carbonell, “Bargaining and contesting the new organisation of working time in an automobile plant”
Several new collective contracts have been signed in the French industrial sector since 2012. These contracts modify, amongst other things, the organization of working time of employees, in order to reestablish business profit margins and make businesses more competitive. In this article, we will study the consequences of modifications of the organization of working time on workers of the PSA-Mulhouse plant, where two new collective contracts have been signed in 2013 and 2016.
Keywords: industry, automobile, PSA, working time, labour, competitivity.
Classification JEL : Z13, J81, J22
Simon Paye, “Long work hours in salaried employment and self-employement. Measures and problems”
A gap of more than 10 hours separates the weekly working hours of employees and self-employed. This article questions this specificity using data from the French Labour force survey. We found evidence of a systematic cleavage between employees and self-employed, even within single professions. Yet self-employment does not always translate in the same way. Different hourly patterns can be identified and linked to social characteristics. These findings are used to reassess current interpretations and research questions.
Keywords: working time, self-employment, employment, professions, hourly plans.
Classification JEL : A14 – Sociology of Economics ; J22 – Time Allocation and Labor Supply ; J16 – Economics of Gender • Non-labor Discrimination
Maelezig Bigi, “Hours and days. The gendered norms of time availability of engineers in France and Finland”
The comparison of the relationship to working time of two groups of engineers opposes a norm of extensive availability unfavourable to women ’ s careers in France, to a limited and reversible norm whose appropriation is less sexually differentiated in Finland. In the Finnish company, the different temporal arrangements (long weeks, short days) are based on the objectivation of working time and its sharing, underlining the role of the legal definition of working time.

Classification JEL : Firm Behavior : Empirical Analysis (D22), Labor Force and Employment, Size, and Structure (J21), Economic Sociology (Z13)
Charles Bosvieux-Onyekwelu, “Profit, Employment Time and Ethical Value-Added. Pro Bono Work in Global Law Firms Established in France”
Pro bono practice unfolding in global law firms is interesting to observe for what it tells us about the contemporary transformations of capitalism and of employment relationship. It is grounded on a process of converting free labour into paid work, as well as on the idea that profit can be supplemented by ethical value-added. Based on interviews and observations conducted in the Parisian branches of several law firms, this article claims to adopt a sociology of work outlook on a phenomenon too commonly approached through the exclusive lens of socio-legal studies.
Keywords: Pro bono, lawyers, transnational law firms, sociology of work, economic sociology.
Classification JEL : I11 ; J3 ; J44.
François-Xavier Devetter, Annie Dussuet, Emmanuelle Puissant, “Reduction of work to ‘productive’ time in home help. A tool for lowering the ‘cost’ of work”
This article focuses on the definitions of working time in the context of jobs associated with the home help services sector. Two main points are highlighted in the paper. The division of working time between a “productive” time and a “non-productive” time nourishes both a public and a private strategy aiming to lower the cost of labor, hindering women ’ s status on the labor market. Such a division also contributes to a radical change in the content of work and services.
Keywords: home care services, working time, rationalization, working conditions.
