After 1945, the time has come to question the responsibility of the writer and his possibility to contribute to the historical, social, and moral progress of society. From the same starting point as his contemporaries, Gary arrives at radically different aesthetic, political and ethical solutions. The novel, for him, questions the destiny of the human being, reveals himself to himself and, above all, creates himself, the dream supplanting reality. This is the responsibility of the writer.
