This article examines Verlaine’s prose writing by focusing on “Le Juge jugé,” published in L’Art in 1865. Primarily an audacious critique of Barbey d’Aurevilly, it is also a carefully crafted piece of writing that is not unconnected to his poetry and his first experiments in the field of prose poetry.
