This article discusses the spectral vibrations of Verlaine’s poetry (in other words, its relationship to the “matière-émotion” of language, which is indeed its main meaningful element) through the lens of the idea of music boxes and other paleophonic cylinder machines. A poem by Verlaine can be understood as a paleophonic music box that embodies the poetic idea of phantasmic return, a return that is symbolically Orphic but is also a return to the spectral vibrations of the in-fans of language.
