This article examines the attention that Albert Béguin brings to bear on Verlaine’s poetry in 1957. Beguin defines poetry as “knowledge” and seems to exclude Verlaine from it. It seems interesting to evaluate this critical position, which makes it necessary to resituate the author of Romances sans paroles in (French and European) romanticism and to question his relationship with transcendence.
