In Voyage to the Orient we find words that seem to pose no problem of interpretation but which have a meaning unfamiliar to today’s readers. There are also passages which would appear to be erroneous, when in fact they can be justified if we put them in their literary or linguistic context. This article examines some of these cases to suggest that our spontaneous reaction is sometimes misleading.
