The Armenians, a central figure in the Journey to the Orient, are probably symptomatic for the « intellectual awakening » of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. Two different moments, corresponding to two dramaturgies and two types of fiction, have in common the literary model of the “comédie romanesque”. Apart from one case revealing religious fanaticism, the Armenian « matieral » contributes to show examples of social advancement and, considering the the art of the storyteller, a dreaming vision.
