When Gérard de Nerval arrived in Weimar at the end of August 1850 to hear Lohengrin, he was welcomed into a circle of “young [Wagner] disciples,” musical composers or critics who knew their master’s work well. Francophiles and French speakers, these musicians are the agents who disseminate these lyric dramas and the composer’s theory in the press and in conversation, and they testify to the notoriety of Nerval. They played an essential role in the familiarity that the French poet acquires with Richard Wagner.
