If there were a single emblematic year in the history of censorship, it would be 1857, with one of its famous victims being Charles Baudelaire. In the context of a censorship system that was at its height, the poet was prosecuted by Ernest Pinard for his volume Les Fleurs du mal. Although he had not yet made a name for himself beyond the small literary circles he frequented in Paris, the regime of Napoleon III sought to condemn Baudelaire for his offense and insubordination to the political and moral order.
