Considering the “states of poetry” in the work of Rostand means studying his poetic work, strictly speaking, which began in 1890 with Les Musardises, but also the way in which his writing for the theater, in particular in Cyrano de Bergerac, is enhanced by reflections and statements in favor of a renewal of poetry. Far from rejecting the contributions of Symbolism, Rostand moves beyond it while attempting a synthesis. The question of verse situates him at the heart of the debates taking place from Romanticism to Symbolism.
