Marc Fumaroli, Mireille Huchon, François Moureau, « Rabelais, l’Homère français ? »
In relation to the “Parallèle burlesque” between Rabelais and Homer by Dufresny–an account of the first critical edition of Rabelais and the translation of Homère by Anne Dacier (Mercure galant, 1711)– this book brings together research on the turning point between the end of the reign of Louis IV and the beginning of that of Louis XV, on the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, on the politics and artistic tastes of the Regent, and on the return to Rabelais, whose work is in “l’Index” as a symbol of French gaiety and directness.

1020Considering the “states of poetry” in the work of Rostand means studying his poetic work, strictly speaking, which began in 1890 with Les Musardises, but also the way in which his writing for the theater, in particular in Cyrano de Bergerac, is enhanced by reflections and statements in favor of a renewal of poetry. Far from rejecting the contributions of Symbolism, Rostand moves beyond it while attempting a synthesis. The question of verse situates him at the heart of the debates taking place from Romanticism to Symbolism.

This study looks at the conditions under which Rostand wrote and published the poems that were collected in Le Vol de la Marseillaise soon after his death. Starting with an analysis of the discursive situation that was furnished for him during the world war and based on readings of several plays, it shows how Rostand was able to appropriate war discourse and how he found the means to bring it before the public in such a way that he came to be seen as a real national poet.

In writing La Princesse lointaine for Sarah Bernhardt, Edmond Rostand uses the figure of the troubadour Jaufré Rudel who, according to the legend imposed by his Vida, died at the gates of Tripoli, in the arms of the Lady for whom he sang his “love from afar.” Yet theatricalizing the original verse in a play implies a dramatization that is missing from the source texts, for which the principle of incarnation is both the cause and the effect.
Keywords: Rostand, La Princesse lointaine, medieval lyric, Jaufré Rudel
Why has literary history categorized Cyrano de Bergerac as the anachronistic resurgence of romantic drama a half-century after it supposedly became obsolete? A critical dossier of its creation helps deconstruct this common preconception. Ignoring the continuation of Romanticism after Les Burgraves (which did not fail) and limiting Rostand to his inspiration from Hugo establishes a false periodization that aims to do away with Romanticism.

After the triumph of Cyrano de Bergerac, critics were quick to compare Rostand to Hugo. This parallel should not hide Musset’s profound influence on Rostand, a predilection that is manifest in his poetry (Les Musardises) and in his theater (Les Romanesques, L’Aiglon). Sixty years apart, the works echo each other. Beyond the particular case of Rostand, this dialogue allows us to reevaluate the periodization of literary Romanticism.

To portray preciosity in Cyrano, Rostand turned to the aesthetic category of preciosity provided by the nascent discipline of literary history: it is both a moment in mores and literature and an eternal tendency of the national spirit. However, the proximity between Roxane and other Rostand heroines suggests a very “fin de siècle” treatment of this preciosity, which Rostand uses as a bulwark against the brutality, 1022decadence, and cynicism of his time. Deliberately anachronistic, his “precious” poetry oscillates between the hope for revitalization and the perils of parody.

The paternal question is fundamental in L’Aiglon, a play that is contemporary to the birth of psychoanalysis. Due to an inverted Oedipal complex, the Duke of Reichstadt is unable to mourn and his mind is haunted by the ghost of Napoleon I. Among his entourage, the name of his father is a taboo that he seeks to transgress but he sabotages the escape plan that could lead him to the French throne. L’Aiglon reflects an author inhibited by his literary father, Victor Hugo.
Keywords: Rostand, L’Aiglon, Napoléon, paternal figures
Rostand is not included among the key figures of the revolution in theater that took place in the late nineteenth century. Too verbal, romantic, and heroic, his theater is considered part of the past. Yet his material imagination and taste for scenic exactitude bring him closer to the putative father of modern staging. Nonetheless, this desire for the concrete makes use of a mode of writing that does not reduce stage directions to a mere stenography of the performance. Scenic poetry passes through a poetry of stage direction, “limiting wishes but not the dream” (Chantecler).
Keywords: Rostand, theater, dramaturgy, stage directions
While the French and foreign publics have celebrated Cyrano de Bergerac for more than a century, this play and others by its author have been subject to often virulent attacks. This work examines the aesthetic and/or political attacks that came from the Symbolist movement, the Nouvelle Revue française, the nationalist right, and the progressive left.

Act II of Le Cavalier seul evokes the Byzantium of the first Crusade. While it reflects a well-known anti-Byzantinism, it nonetheless conforms to historical truth by more or less faithfully reconstructing the pomp of the imperial court, the surprise of the Byzantines at the arrival of the crusaders, and the doctrinal (double procession of the Holy Spirit) and ecclesiological (opposing ideas on the government of the Church) disagreements that have separated, in principle since 1054, Eastern and Latin Christians.
