This article examines the unity (or lack thereof) of “Les Fiançailles” and secondarily of “Le Brasier,” poems written from 1908 onward. These neosymbolist poems spark a desire for a definitive interpretation as much as they frustrate that desire: the reader must plot a course through the dispersion. The tension between unity and multiplicity is constantly reenacted throughout “Les Fiançailles” in its composition by collage and montage, as well as in its figural logic.
