  • Abstract: In approximately fifty pamphlets published between 1604 and 1632, Maître Guillaume, Henri IV’s jester, is the attributed author of political commentary in a light register, where twaddle and farfetched and nonsensical ideas play a central role. This study looks at the rhetorical effects that, in many of these texts, result from the standpoint from which Guillaume’s utterances are delivered - that of a “crazy” expert at pitching ideas - asking how this fanciful discourse seek to impact public opinion.
