In angulo Italiæ Bossuet and the Republic of Venice

Examining the representation of Venice in Bossuet’s work sheds light on the status Bossuet grants to this apparently peripheral area of Italy in his ecclesiastical erudition. It also makes it possible to ­consider how such a reference was handled by a bishop whose Gallicanism was intensely discussed, even though the Republic and its official theologian, Paolo Sarpi, aroused a keen interest of Gallican circles at the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth centuries.
