Jean-Baptiste Massillon is one of the only French eighteenth-century bishops who was famous for his preaching. He thus offers an interesting case: did his owe his brilliant career to preaching, or to other factors? Focusing on various sermons and funeral sermons, this article explores Massillon’s views on ideal bishops, as well as the way he calls upon an efficient network to become a bishop, or the way his pastoral involves his pastoral model.
