The idea of a powerful episcopal voice is a truism that can be dated prior to 1650. However, at the end of the seventeenth century, bishops in Eastern France, while they may at times express themselves at the heart of pastoral action, become mere occasional speakers. Nevertheless, by fueling preaching and ensuring its quality remains constant, they make Camus’ adage come true: “Another main function of the Bishop is preaching, either through his own voice or through someone else’s”.
