The title page of 1836 demonstrates that the publication of Gaspard de la Nuit should have set a precedent in the history of books: for the first time, a writer-artist would have been the author of an iconotext realizing the Romantic ideal of a synthesis of the arts with the aim of making reading a subjective experience that is a true experience of co-creation.
