It is no surprise that the grand rhétoriqueurs should be counted among the greatest of Oulipo’s « plagiaires par anticipation ». However, there are few formal imitations in their writings; the rhétoriqueurs are, first and foremost, a tutelar figure, because their relationship to the French language is rooted in craftsmanship.
