We surmise that in his celebrated sonnet “Voyelles”, Rimbaud gave a preeminence to colors, rather than to vowels. Indeed, in most languages there is a “natural” order in which the names of colors are born—and this order is the same in most civilizations—which is less arbitrary than the letters in an alphabet. Rimbaud may have associated vowels to colors instead of colors to vowels.
