Childhood, the evocation of a poet striving to make himself a seer, the drifting from City to Cities and, finally, the depiction of arriving at the age of twenty (Jeunesse III): Rimbaud went to some lengths to give his Illuminations the overall look of a Kunstlerroman. What does the « moment of Illuminations », as it were, represent in the poet’s intellectual trajectory ? Interrogating the structure and organisation of Rimbaud’s volume of prose poems, the present essay seeks to address this, and other, questions.
