  • Abstract: By comparing two genealogical fables which share a similar structure, this study distinguishes the role of the marvellous in the epic context and the context of romance. While the chanson de geste of the Chevalier au Cygne opposes the Christian marvellous with the diabolical supernatural in order to reinforce heavily polarised ethics, the novel of Mélusine cultivates a plurality of voices by using the marvellous to flesh out its meaning.
