Article from a collective work:Previous 15/19 Next
This article explores the theme of fear in Duras’ work, beginning with an examination of its symptoms in La Douleur. The origins of various fears–of madness, writing, the sea, the forest, the Other, death, the unknown–are found in Marguerite Duras’ childhood: a fickle and depressed mother, a violent brother, blows, the cruelty of the colonies. Finally, the article draws on Freudian psychoanalysis to explain the mechanism of fear in her texts.
