Louise Colet’s comedy La Jeunesse de Goethe stirred up controversy in the Parisian and German press and in German studies. The inaccuracy of the historical and literary facts it refers to challenged critics. Interpreting the contradictions inherent in the work as signaling irony, the present article offers a careful reading of La Jeunesse de Goethe in order to realize an aesthetics of romantic irony that is close to the concept developed by Friedrich Schlegel in 1797.
