“Ballaciner” around political commitment in cinema in the Maghreb

Cinema in the Maghreb emerged under colonization, in the shadow of Western cinema, and was inevitably engagé. Our contribution uses several films to analyze this commitment and its new forms, from its genesis to the present. We will examine two types of commitment. One is endemic to the birth of this cinema, linked to the context of liberation. The other is concerned with shedding light, first, on social matters within nation-states, and second, on the “desire for democratization” during the Arab Springs.
