  • Abstract: The “Langue ville travail identité” programme aims at documenting ongoing changes in Toulouse and Manchester. Several tendencies towards levelling can already be confirmed from our provisional results in Toulouse: schwa and nasal vowels are evolving in the direction of northern varieties of mainland French. However, the stability of the mid vowel system and of the “loi de position” raises an interesting question: can it be interpreted as evidence for levelling, non-levelling or counter-levelling?
