Published in 1883, Ce qui ne meurt pas received a cold reception from critics and the French public alike, and was the subject of two foreign-language translations, into Spanish and English. This article examines the two translations, analyzing the editorial contexts in which they were produced. It then looks at the commentary that followed publication, to understand what impact they had on the foreign reception of Barbey's work.
