The intellectual who goes to war inevitably brings along a whole set of cultural baggage on the soles of his shoes that he summons extensively. Gracq is thus accompanied by the rich Pantheon of his literary references. The fact remains that the experience is fundamentally and terribly carnal: it is the body that is fully mobilized and summoned to respond to massive requisitions. The physical ordeal in which one risks one’s skin then becomes a cruel feast of embodiment.
