  • Abstract: From the thirteenth century onwards, Parisian clerks entertained themselves by making their towns the subject of colourful poems. Many of these texts – notably Dit des rues de Paris by Guillot de Paris, the anonymous Rues de Paris en vers, and the Dit des Crieries de Paris by Guillaume de La Villeneuve – resemble a poetic stroll about the bustling city. The object of this “walking poetry” is not to praise the monuments of Paris but rather evoke the city’s daily atmosphere.
