Most editions of Rabelais’s Œuvres published posthumously in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries do not include, in the prologue to Gargantua, the expression in the literal sense (authentic lesson), but rather in the liberal sense (corrupt lesson). This article engages in deep reflections on this (in)significant misprint.
