In the conclusion of the episode of the Ford of Vède in Gargantua (chapter thirty-six), Rabelais gives the first attestation of the word hippiatrie in French, while asking the reader a hippiatric riddle: why does Eudémon’s horse recover from a suros by pushing its foot into the belly of a large, fat villain? The answer lies in Hippiatria, sive Marescalia, Lorenzo Rusio’s fourteenth-century blacksmith’s treatise, reissued in Paris by Chrestien Wechel in 1531 and 1532 under a new title.
