Gargantua is a cleverly constructed work, governed by a threefold system of organization: the linear narrative apparatus, which consists of narrating events in order, is complemented by a highly visible framework and highly visible games of opposition. But Rabelais at the same time likes to disturb each of these principles of structuring the story. He is in fact a comic architect, building and undermining his edifice with the same creative gesture whose meaning must be questioned.
