In chapter twenty-three of Gargantua, the young giant “fai[t] les petitz popismes sus un cheval.” The term popismes, of which one finds a verbal echo in the Sciomachie (“poppizer”), is here the object of a lexicographical investigation. This investigation paints us a picture of a philologist Rabelais who is not only a reader of Politien (Misc., I, 32) but also still attentive to the specificities of equestrian vocabulary.
