In the "Briefve Declaration" attached to the Quart livre, Rabelais gives many definitions of medical terms, including "Symptomates: accidents occurring in illness, such as pain in the side, cough, hard breathing, pleurisy." Rabelais' Aldine edition of Galen, now kept in Sheffield, reveals the sources the humanist doctor used for this definition: annotated copies of The Art of Medicine and Of Difficult Respiration.
