Michel Gramain, “The reception of Jean le Bleu”
1932–1933 was a period of intense activity for Giono. Jean le Bleu was published between Solitude la pitié and Le Serpent d’étoiles, when Lanceurs de graines was finding great success on the stage. Critics speculated: Was it autobiography, memoir, a novel? Its reception was generally very positive: they stressed its liveliness, the power of the work as a whole, the originality and accuracy of the images, the elegance with which the memories are arranged, and the sensitivity of the narration of this children’s book, which exudes strength, joy, and sensuality.
Keywords: reception, genre, autobiography, novel, title.
188Christian Morzewski, “Jean le Bleu, a story like a Russian doll, and a fractal work”
In its relation to the author’s other works, both earlier and later, Jean le Bleu is like a Russian doll from which one can extract and develop stories that all revolve around a family triad of avatars of “fathers” and “sons,” competing against each other in the pursuit of a young woman. But the principal narrative provides a rebuttal of this Oedipal scenario: a hymn to the glory of the father by a loving son, in a united family. It is therefore both an invented novel and a crypto-autobiography.
Keywords: fractal form, intertextuality, openings, extensions, Oedipal, myth.
Frédérique Parsi, “Music and musicians in Jean le Bleu”
Although the young Giono was hardly a musician, Jean le Bleu, a fictionalized autobiography, forged a musical myth of his origins to give an account of the birth of the poet. The musical episodes reveal a truth that is not factual but poetic, pointing to a founding element of Gionian writing. The composers of choice are only chosen as models if they offer the performer the opportunity to play his own part and compose in turn. The music lesson is therefore a lesson in poetry.
Keywords: music, initiation, song, world song, instruments, musical technique, verbal music.
Marie-Anne Arnaud Toulouse, “Jean le Bleu, tales of a religious education”
In Jean le Bleu, the Catholic religion is a social phenomenon, of which the narrator gives a realistic and satirical description. The child’s spiritual aspirations cannot be satisfied by a religion whose language and rituals have lost their sacred meaning. They find new vitality through the subversive intervention of Pan, god of nature. The text, in the syncretism of traditions and in surpassing them, seeks a very human way to fight against loneliness and despair.
Keywords: religion, Catholic, Christ, Pan, paganism, syncretism.
Llewellyn Brown, “Poetry and body in Jean le Bleu”
In this bildungsroman, the narrator describes the exhilaration that speech and contact with nature created in him from early childhood. This univocal experience, however, reveals its anchoring in the reality of sexuality and death, revealing the disharmony that affects the body. The narcissistic confinement represented by Franchesc Odripano’s poetic words gives way, in the end, to an encounter with the loss caused by war, which highlights the body reduced to the state of an object.
Keywords: bildungsroman, literary initiation, poetry, body, psychoanalysis and literature, sexuality, poetry and death, hallucination, perspective, love and death.
Laurent Fourcaut, “Jean le Bleu, making the mouth sing, or the feather of the snake”
Jean le Bleu is marked by song, the song of the world emitted by the mouth/sexual organ of the Mother-World, the song of humans expressing the forces that pass through them, like the angel, the vector of the snake of force, which becomes a feathered snake. But a solution of continuity threatens to separate forces and forms, with the mother below, the father above, trapping the forces of desire in the dead letter of writing. The book invents another solution, a formless form that is capable of expressing everything below.
Keywords: Mother-World, strength, desire, mouth, song, feathered snake, angel, misery, writing.
