The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling by Henry Fielding was the earliest example of an English novel of manners. Its translation into French by Pierre-Antoine de la Place was met with enormous success. A likely source of Voltaire’s Candide, this picaresque novel was adapted for the stage before being translated into almost every European language.
