Utopia and Discovery Representations of The Dispute in Japan

This paper aims to examine The Dispute performed in Japan from the viewpoint of the concept of utopia and discovery. By the mise en abyme technique, this play has a certain type of utopian aspect. By using the form of play-within-a-play, we realize an imaginary place on stage and that allows the public to discover society’s mechanisms and human beings’ nature. From this point of view, the staging of Hirotaka Kumabayashi is specially considered.
