Starting with his lectures at the École normale in the 1880s, Ferdinand Brunetière laid the foundations of the philological and pedagogical principles that governed the reading of Montaigne’s Essais throughout the twentieth century and led to the disavowal of the 1595 edition prepared by Marie de Gournay.
