Here we consider lyricism and its historical relationship to Mallarmé. Whether it is considered a genre, a literary movement or a way of relating to the world, the lyric occupies a special place in the history of a work. It is just as much connected to ‘traditional inspiration’ as to the ‘critical poem’. The problem is a complex one, in so far as it is linked to how we read Mallarmé in the second half of the 20th century.
