Why did Sartre not publish La Dernière Chance, the fourth volume of Les Chemins de la liberté? In the light of literary genetic studies and “Résistance,” a script written between 1943 and 1944, the failure to complete this cycle of novels would seem to be a result of the conditions in which Sartre left Stalag XII-D in 1941. By looking at the cycle’s reception, this article places La Dernière Chance in the context of France in the aftermath of the war, an essential and still little-known period of Sartre’s life.
