This article explores the aporias peculiar to Emoji Dick, an iconoclastic emoticon translation of Melville’s Moby Dick and a paradoxical story that exemplifies the translation paradigm: a novelistic summation where a novelistic component is absent, lingua franca resistant to decipherment, an artifact of the digital age with vocabulary drawn from electronic resources, which nevertheless relies on paper to ensure its dissemination.
