Dominique Brancher and Thierry Gontier, “Introduction. The disease and its places”
Montaigne’s attention to disease extends to very different epistemic fields: medical, psychological, moral, political, even metaphysical. Illness appears not as an accident that disturbs a “nature” which would be in itself “healthy”, but as an essential component of this nature. This introduction aims to make a first review of the meanings of this ambivalent notion in relation to their contexts.
Keywords: medicine, anthropology, skepticism, passions, corruption, social crisis.
Sylvia Giocanti, “The desire to end illness as an anthropological symptom”
Fighting illness could be a nonsense, if we consider human condition as a disease in itself. This paper shows that, in Montaigne’s skeptical anthropology, firstly health can be considered as an adjustment of disease, and therapeutic obstinacy as a pathological refusal of self; secondly that the healthy acceptance of oneself as sick differs from Stanley Cavell’s interpretation of skepticism, based on Descartes’ work, as pathological obstinacy to cure humans of their contingency.
Keywords: Skepticism, Anomaly, Anthropology, ordinary, Stanley Cavell, Waldo Emerson.
John Christian Laursen, “Montaigne and Burton in dialogue with the Cynics. Illness of the body, illness of the mind, and illness of the state”
This essay is intended to recover parts of the dialogues with the Cynical tradition carried out by Michel de Montaigne and Robert Burton. Neither of the two followed this tradition all of the way, but they did engage in productive borrowing and debate, agreeing and disagreeing with the different ancient Cynics as it suited their purposes in their analyses of the illnesses of the body, illnesses of the mind, and illnesses of the state.
Keywords: Burton, Cynics, Diogenes the Cynic, parrhesia, sexual freedom, askesis, ponos, melancholy.
Rebekka Martic, “Between “natural disease of the mind” and curative “studious passion”. The polysemy of “curiosity” in the Essays”
Through the dual prism of disease and cure, this article reexamines the equivocations of “curiosity” under five different aspects: the moral one, as part of the crisis of inherited values; the political one, as a contagious illness in times of turmoil; the anthropological one, as natural and original human condition; the medical one, as a symptom of mental morbidity and vitality; and the epistemological one, as experience of the limits and the possibilities in a world in perpetual motion.
Keywords: curiosity, polysemy, cure, antiperistasis, passion, hybris, irresolution.
Alain Legros, “Scribbling as a symptom”
Montaigne observes, as a doctor, the society of his time plagued by civil wars. Even if he does not know what treatment to prescribe to this big sick body, he sees the proliferation of superfluous writings as a symptom of a social pathology. Although 176he is not a sociologist, his experience of local floods provides him with the metaphors enabling to account for it: “scribbling” is analogous to a flood. He even wonders if he is not himself subject to this addiction.
Keywords: scribbling, symptom, body, proliferation, overflow.
Philippe Desan, “The health of States according to Montaigne”
The State is often seen as a living organism that suffers violent repercussions from religious and political turmoil and therefore threaten its survival. Maintaining the State then becomes a matter of public prophylaxis. The examples of Machiavelli and Botero allow us to better understand this analogy between medicine and politics in the Renaissance and lead us to situate Montaigne’s remarks on the State in a logic of conservation of a sick body.
Keywords: State, political philosophy, Machiavelli, Guivanni Botero, Montaigne.
177Nicola Panichi, “Illness of health and health of illness. Lycas and its Theaters”
The anecdote of Lycas shows that the task of philosophy is to make man aware of his own illnesses. Stoics, Epicureans and sceptics, however, do not provide satisfactory means. Making Lycas aware of his dreams means killing him by killing his illusions. The annihilation of voluptas causes the birth of new diseases. The human condition defeats the effectiveness of the bittersweet medicine that philosophy claims to be.
Keywords: Lycas, theater, philosophy, voluptas, imagination, illness, health.
Alberto Ribeiro Gonçalves de Barros, “Reformation, Republicanism and the Right of Resistance”
This paper discusses the consolidation of the right to resist in early modern political thought. The right of resistance to tyranny emerged in the Reformed thought, particularly among the English and Scottish Protestants. The debate occupied a prominent place during the English civil wars. Then, through John Milton’s and Algernon Sidney’s political writings, republican principles have consolidated the idea that the people have the right to resist as well as to change the form of government.
Keywords: Reformation, Republicanism, Resistance, Milton, Sidney.
Chiara Pavan, “The ethical recognition of Otherness. A study of Ricœurian thought before hermeneutics”
This article deals with the question of intersubjectivity, more specifically with the problem that this question raises within the phenomenological tradition, for which it seems necessary to break through the limits of consciousness in order to account for the other. This question is addressed through the reconstruction of the pre-hermeneutic theory of intersubjectivity that Paul Ricœur coined in the 1950s, combining the phenomenological approach with an ethical perspective.
Keywords: alterity, Ricœur, phenomenology, ethics, respect, Kant.
