Knowledge of Government in the Classical Age of Islam”
This special issue deals with the political ideas developed by different authors, and which have their source in the commentary of texts inherited from the Greeks, or in government knowledge developed from the beginning of Islam. It seeks to underline the richness of these intellectual traditions, whether purely philosophical, juridical-theological or historical-literary and proposes to make their contents known to readers, by renewing the reading of the political themes and issues they contain.
Keywords: Mirrors of princes, arts of governing, human excellence, law, pastoral power, sovereignty.
Makram Abbès, “The Political Aristotle and Arab Philosophers”
What was Aristotle’s political influence on the Arab philosophers, in the absence of the Stagirite’s major text in this field, which is The Politics? The article shows that this influence detectable in al-Fārābī, Miskawayh, Avempace or Averroes must be approached from other texts such as The Nicomachean Ethics or The Rhetoric, and that it can also be deduced from the strong frequentation of Aristotle’s system and his way of approaching philosophical problems.
Keywords: practical philosophy, prudence, human perfections, perfect city.
Mohamed Ben Mansour, “Al-Maġribī’s On Politics. The Reverberations of the Mirror in the Face of the Reality of Power”
Al-Maġribī’s (981-1027) On Politics is a compendium devoted to the government of self, elite and common people. While following the tradition of the Mirrors of Princes, the text is distinguished by the central place it gives to the therapeutic and hygienic dimensions of the prince’s body. The preservation of the prince’s health takes precedence over ethical and spiritual perfection. Such themes are explored in the commentary and illustrated by the unpublished translation of the text into French.
Keywords: body, government, reform, élite, common people, surveillance.
Anoush Ganjipour, “Royalty as a Metaphysical Function. On the Mystical Politics of Afḍal al-Dīn Kāshānī”
Focusing on The Makings and Ornaments of Virtuous Kings, a political treatise written by Kāshānī (1155-1213), this article addresses two issues. The first is related to how the author constructed his political thought at the confluence of primary philosophy, ethics, psychology and mysticism. As for the second, it shows that Kāshānī’s treatise is a key element to better identify the new orientation of Islamic political thought from the twelfth century onwards, closely linked to metaphysics.
Keywords: Islamic political thought, government, divine monarchy, conflict, Afḍal al-Dīn Kāshānī, Mirror for Princes.
184Rémy Gareil, “In the Shadow of the Mirrors for Princes. The Standards of Good Government in the Abbasid Production of the 4th/10th century from the Case of al-Masʿūdī (d. 345/956)”
Based on al-Mas‘ūdī’s (d. 956), this article shows that, in a time of intense reflection on knowledge and power, historiographical production also contributed to the development of government norms. The narrative sources allow us to identify the emergence of models and counter-models offered to Islamic rulers, a necessary step towards putting the philosophical content of the mirrors of princes and the political precepts they promote in a precise historical framework.
Keywords: Abbasid caliphs, historiography, art of ruling, universal history, pre-Islamic and Islamic rulers, medieval Islam.
Sophia Mouttalib, “Legislating before the Ottoman Constitutional Era. Law and Sovereign in the Political Thought of Islam”
This article studies the notion of “constitution” and approaches it as the extension of a long process of “positivization” of law, at work since the Classical Age of Islam. The establishment of a secular justice, the development of kānūn, the will to endow the State with a constitution: all these points attest to the irreducibility of pre-modern and modern normativity to the idea of a transcendent divine Legislator, at the origin of all law and the organization of all political structures.
Keywords: constitution, sovereignty, legal normativity, Ottoman Empire, codification, kānūn.
