The Round Table is an inescapable element of Arthurian narratives, so much so that 13th-century romances are faced with several contradictions about it; the Vulgate-Suite of the Merlin undertakes to rectify them by reconciling the Round Table created under the reign of Uterpendragon by Merlin with the idea that “classic” novels have of it. It stages a transfer of power, from the generation of “old knights” to the one of Arthur, distinguished as much by its courtesy as by its prowess.
