Disfiguring otherness and representing alienation Trans reappropriation of bodies in the horror genre

The theme of transgressing gender norms in a horror context runs from nineteenth-century gothic literature through to horror films at the end of the twentieth century. Used both to express a reactionary backlash and create a counter-culture imaginary through which to critique heteronormative norms, these artistic productions, as well as the bodies and characters that populate them, necessitate a dialectic analysis of the trans critiques and reappropriations they are subject to.
