Portrait of a Lady on fire brings to the screen the painting of a portrait, which competes with two other pictorial genres: the nude and the landscape. It is also augmented by the use of two other mediums foreign to painting, printed text and music. This article aims at studying how the competitive regimes of genres and mediums nourish a both cinematographic and pictorial reflection on the nature of the act of figuring.
