The miniseries Winnetou the Mescalero, was first aired on the French second channel in 1980, following a series of rewritings – notably the European cinematic adaptations of the 1960s - from the “model” conceived of by German novelist, Karl May. The TV series breaks with the numerous intermedial and intercultural avatars, depicting the Native American characters more realistically and restoring a right that had been taken from them through historical and cinematic misrepresentation.
