Machines have an interior: it is where their mechanism, their inner secret lies. If one of the aims of film studies is to analyse production machines, should they cover this interior or just stick to the surface, to the interface between the machine and its user? For Gilbert Simondon, machines should be open, in all possible senses, and this is at the heart of his policy.
