The biopic genre suggests, although falsely according to Pierre Bourdieu, that every life can become a story. Among biographical films, those focused on artists interrogate the place of creativity within cinematic storytelling, i.e. the different relationships between the artist’s life and the filmic depiction. This article considers biopics about painters, with a particular focus on their connection to art in poetic and aesthetic terms.
